It was a true summer’s day. Lisa and Franz were holding hands and their love was illuminating. They had chosen to take a enchanting and romantic walk through the Simmering Cemetery. He picked a perfect spot and a perfect day for their fifth anniversary celebration.
Welcome to Austria folks! You may think that the above clip is exaggerating and morbid in some ways but here in Vienna, it’s dead on. However, the cemeteries here are mind- blowing and beautiful. The gravestones aren’t just stones with the birth and death. They are monuments compared to the stones that you see in most graveyards around America (especially Montana). They are gardens that are under constant, tender care, a beautiful church in the center, and gravestones and monuments that gilded with gold, marble and elaborate, allegorical carvings.
Now the biggest difference between the U.S. and Austria for their dead is how the dead are celebrated and buried in some cases. The place to work is the funeral business and casket design. For instance, if you are low on money and can’t spend very much for a casket, the optimal option is the recyclable casket. Just place it over the grave, pull the cord and voila! The body makes it into the grave and the casket is ready to use for someone else. The more expensive option would be to have your casket custom designed in bronze with hand etchings and sculptures like Empress Maria Theresia. Either way, you get a long parade and a jolly celebration afterwards. You can purchase a head stone to visit for the future or you can just keep them in your memory because after ten years, they take the previous tenant out and replace them.
So, next time you are in Vienna, Austria, make sure you take a romantic and enchanting walk through any of the cemeteries. Don’t forget to bring the picnic!

Our Home in Vienna
Here is a quick look at our little home in Vienna. Our landlord and landlady are wonderful!!! They gave us fresh bread, jam, milk and butter to help start us off. Then the landlord gave us a walking tour of our neighborhood showing us where to shop for the best deals and how to get around quicker. During our little tour we got to see and hear the Viennese Military Band play jazz and it was interesting to see how some of their instruments differed from ours. We also had our first meal out tonight...very very good ;-) However, we are discovering that even though many of the people know English, it's a little frustrating for us not knowing German. Good thing we have an option to take it while we're here. We have an orientation tomorrow and our first class: a walking tour of Vienna for Art History. I am stoked! That also means you'll get more pics and info tomorrow!

Here, we have the hallway leading to me and Jenna's room. Sylvia is off to the right. The mirrors you see on the left are actually closets for us to hang our clothes - hangers included :-)

And this is my side. Our windows look out over a private garden every day. And, our neighbors are music artists! This is amazing so far and I can't wait until tomorrow

What is this all about?
Hey ya'll!!! Thanks for checkin in! Just a couple days ago I thought it would be a great idea to create a blog/live journal of my upcoming trip to Vienna, Austria so that you could follow my adventures. You'll be able to see my pictures, videos, class notes on various subjects, and tracks of the concerts we'll be performing. I obviously don't have this completely set up yet, but when you visit in a couple more days this site will be full of my exciting experiences. '
I will try to update it every night to get rid of my pictures and such off my camera...and to keep all of you lovely visitors in the loop:-)
Enjoy!
~Love,
Bridget
